The den was so cozy and warm. Only three queens were in the nursery, but it still had that milky smell. Twigkit loved that smell. The tiny she-kit had awoken, curled up in a ball. She was about three moons old, and was starting to eat fresh-kill. It had snowed early this year, and all the warriors seemed shocked about. All the prey would hide away so usually before it snowed they caught extra prey. But no one had expected it to snow so early.
Twigkits eyes were still closed so all she saw was black. She shifted, trying to get back to sleep, but she knew it would be no use.

A black tom crouched quietly, a brown rabbit a few fox leaps ahead of him. He got closer and closer until it heard and raced away, the black tom racing after it. The wind ruffled his fur and howled in his ear. He could see his claws tearing at the grass. The rabbit was ahead of him and it was fast, but he was just as fast. He leaped and landed. He managed to grab the rabbits back legs but it kicked him in the face. The rabbit slipped away and continued running. He hissed. As an apprentice, he would have gone after it, but not now. He stopped and watched it run down the hill as he caught his breath.
